Waterfall Advanced — the bridge Power BI does not draw

Mark a row as a total, a subtotal or a driver, and the chart draws the P&L walk your finance team already has in their heads.

Why the built-in one will not do It shows category movement. It has no subtotal: a checkpoint like Gross Profit floats instead of standing on zero, and the walk stops reconciling.

Free NO PURCHASE, NO WATERMARK

The whole bridge, up to twelve individual drivers — the size of a standard P&L walk.

  • Totals, subtotals and drivers, from a column in your model
  • Checkpoints drawn from zero: Net Revenue, Gross Profit, EBITDA
  • Horizontal or vertical, plus hierarchical drilldown
  • Target line on the anchor bars, with its own label and figure
  • Drivers beyond two standard deviations flagged automatically
  • Summary cards: opening, closing, variance %, biggest gain and loss
  • Colour-blind safe palette and hatched decreases
  • Conditional formatting on bar colour, native fx or a DAX hex
  • Cross-filtering, bookmarks, keyboard, high contrast, tooltips

Pro 30-DAY TRIAL ON APPSOURCE

Depth of analysis, not a rescue from an incomplete chart. The free bridge is already correct.

  • Every driver individually, however long the walk
  • The data table, beside or below the chart: each step with its amount, the running total and its share of the opening figure
  • IBCS monochrome notation, with the emphasis on deviation, for standards-based reporting across companies
  • Label density controls: angle at −30°, −45° or −90°, truncation at N characters, and hiding labels that do not fit

Above twelve drivers the free tier groups the smallest into one "Others" bar. The bridge still closes on the same figure — the detail is coarser, no number is wrong.

A walk a committee can follow
Two wells give you a chart. The third gives you a bridge.

Key benefits

  • It reconciles. Subtotals stand on zero, so the closing bar is the sum of what came before it.
  • It survives print. Hatched decreases read in black and white, in the pack that gets photocopied.
  • It stays inside Power BI. No telemetry, no endpoints, no CDN — nothing leaves the tenant.
  • The free tier is correct, not partial. Grouping beats cropping: a cropped bridge is a wrong bridge.

Tips

  • Set Bar type to aggregate as First. As Sum it returns blank and every bar becomes a driver.
  • Set the Order column to "Do not summarize", or the walk sorts alphabetically.
  • Go horizontal when line-item names are long — they read better down the side than rotated.
  • Turn the hatch on even with colour: it is the only cue that survives a greyscale printer.
